My Approach to Therapy
I work with adolescents and adults who struggle with a variety of issues, ranging from eating disorders, depression, anxiety, LGBT-Q concerns, and phase of life/career issues. I also have experience working with individuals who are suffering loss (including depression or anxiety) secondary to an injury or disability. In my therapy work, I attempt to deepen an individual's level of self-awareness, or insight. I believe insight is essential in making even the smallest changes in our lives. We can’t fix what we don’t understand about ourselves.
I have found that most people develop behavior patterns—ways of relating, thinking, and solving problems—that are adaptive in some way. We usually have good reasons for doing what we do. However, people sometimes discover that such patterns, or coping skills, cease to be effective. When this happens, people may develop symptoms of depression or anxiety. To address these difficulties, I assist people in developing better coping skills, healthier thinking styles, and more effective problem-solving skills. I also encourage people to recognize their strengths.
Finally, I place great emphasis on creating an emotionally safe therapeutic environment. I believe therapy work should feel collaborative and productive.
Additional Services
In addition to psychotherapy, I am a contracted psychologist who performs C & P exams (Compensation and Pension) for Veterans. I interview and document the current severity of a condition (psychological) that is being considered for VA Disability.
